One day, Chad Bouton and his mom went to the store. She parked in a handicapped spot, Chad grabbed ahold of her arm, and they walked into the store. When they came out, there was a note on her car which said she should be ashamed of herself for having her son pretend to be disabled to get that parking space.

When Brianna Scerenscko turned 21, her parents made good on their promise to take her to Las Vegas. So, when her dad took her to the bar, the bartender didn't want to give her a drink because she couldn't make eye contact which to him meant that she was drunk. When she said she would never be able to make eye contact because she was blind, he apologized profusely.

Those are the words of Shamara McCall from the Florida Division of Blind Services Rehabilitation Center in Daytona Beach, FL.
Shamara is visually impaired from diabetic retinopathy. She says it's ok to allow yourself a small pity party, but then move on right through it!

Winona Brackett is an "old" friend of The Cooking Without Looking TV Show. She was with us on one of our first shows when she was only 9 years old.
Winona was born blind. She wants parents of blind children to keep a positive attitude on blindness. She also reminds parents that their blind child is still a kid, and wants to play with their friends. Winona also suggests that parents seek out organizations such as the one her mom, Debby, founded the Florida chapter of the Parents of Blind Children.

Kimberly Strain is a Home Management Instructor with the Florida Division of Blind Services Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Daytona Beach, FL.
Kimberly was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of two, and tells us how to prepare her Ohh-La La French Onion Soup.
"If you are newly blind, just get out there and get some help," says Kimberly. "Services are free."

Everyone in Life should learn how to fall. That's what Brian Bushway believes...especially after falling eight feet straight down a hill while riding his mountain bike...blind.
Brian lost his sight when he was 14. His father and mother, along with his sisters made space for Brian to lead the way, and to teach them how to be with a person who's blind. He now teaches professional athletes how to use all of their senses to make them perform even better at Acoustic Athletics.
Brian LOVES to cook because, as he says, it gives him the chance to be perceived as the caregiver and not the care receiver.

Cindy Hollis was born Blind with only a little bit of sight and light perception. But, by age 22, Cindy was totally blind.
She's held many positions with the American Council of the Blind since she was very young. But, when the pandemic started, she found herself in the job of her dreams as the Manager of Membership Engagement for the ACB. She heads up the programs that include crafting, cooking and more! She doesn't want anyone to feel alone, especially during this time.

As David Steinmetz slowly went blind from Retinitis Pigmentosa he had to re-learn how to live his life. He had to stop driving after hitting someone on a bike. He had to get a new job after his boss let him go because he thought David's blindness was a liability.
But, then David found a rewarding job as Community & Public Relations Manager at Arizona Industries for the Blind where he's worked for 17 years.
